To be visited

The Alpilles

They raise their mantilla of sand stone not very far from the Luberon. It is Salon that watches over the East, whereas Tarascon watches over the West.

This mysterious land bathes in a flaming light and sets its cap at the crests of the high calcareous hills. At these rebellious heights, with summits that do not exceed 500 metres, erosion has made fabulous creatures; stone titans engraved in the rocky mass.

Favoured by the fields of cypress and olive trees, picturesque villages flit about in this region and sublimate the landscape: Le Paradou, Maussane, Mouriès, Fontvieille… and not to forget the majestic Baux de Provence and Saint-Rémy, rich for its ancient site of Glanum, but also Graveson, Maillane.

Saint-Rémy de Provence

Saint-Rémy de Provence, registered as a monument, has been built on one of the eldest archaeological sites. The trading post of Glanum, founded in the 3rd century BC, restructured by the Romans on the order of Julius Caesar, has left enough ancient tracks to spectacularly demonstrate the illustrious civilizations that have marked this site.

The Arc de Triomphe, the thermal baths, the long residential avenue, the temple and natural source of a true Gallo Roman city can be admired.

The charm of these landscapes has inspired various artists, writers and painters, such as Vincent Van Gogh in 1889.

Les Baux de Provence

Registered and labelled as one of the most beautiful villages of France, les Baux de Provence offers mystery, history and architectural beauty as this small town has an architectural treasure of 22 remains registered as Historical Monuments.

The Cyclopean city, nave of the citadel of Baux, splits the sky with its bow. The castle´s ruins are still haunted by former lords, «eaglet race, never a slave», the first of the great Provençal families, coming from the King Balthazar.

Salon-de-Provence: the musée de l´Empéri; the maison de Nostradamus; the imposing château de La Barben. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence: the plateau des Antiques - Glanum; Château Les Baux-de-Provence; Château de Tarascon; the Montmajour abbey; the Fontvieille mill, made famous by A. Daudet.
