The Camargue

The Camargue, enveloped by the Rhône branches, an incredibly humid land, welcomes a unique flora and fauna, which makes it so popular with tourists. The Regional Natural Park covers 86 300 hectares; the gracious pink flamingos on their stilts, the pride of the farmed bulls and the beauty of the horses, jewels of Camargue, give it a spontaneous cachet and plenty of freshness that captivates each visitor.

Considered as being one of the biggest migratory centres of Europe, the Camargue site counts 350 bird species. Some species are short-stay guests, others are permanent residents of the reed beds and marshes. But the Princes of the sky are the raptors, jewels of all the bird species present here: the marsh harrier, the black kite, the sparrowhawk, the buzzard… which wings are spread above the delta. A living picture !

According to the legend, the Camargue banks would have welcomed the Saint Maries, Lazarus and their maidservant Sarah, in exile since Jesus´ death. The church of the Saintes-Maries de la Mer proudly erects above the city, dedicated to the black Virgin, patron saint of the gipsies, to protect the two Saint Maries on its site.

NOT TO BE MISSED:

The musée de Camargue; the Maison du Parc naturel régional and its neighbour, the bird park of Pont-de-Gau; the giant beaches of Piémanson and Beauduc; The Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, with the visit of the church, sheltering Saint Sarah, patron saint of the gipsies.
