Our Region of Aix en Provence

Aix-en-Provence, former capital of Provence, is situated at 30 minutes from the centre of Marseille, at 20 minutes from the airport of Marseille Provence and the TGV railway station of Aix-en-Provence and at 30 minutes from the beaches.
Protected by the mountain Sainte-Victoire at East, Aix counts 300 sunny days per year thanks to its Mediterranean climate.
Aix is also the city of fountains, country houses and gardens, universities, the Thermal baths of Thermes Sextius and the International Festival of Lyric Art.

To be visited

As a city of water and freshness, Aix leans against the arid Sainte-Victoire mountain, of which the rough beauty was glorified by Cézanne´s paintings. The former capital of the counts of Provence has kept an exceptional heritage that can be admired along the noble fronts of the cours Mirabeau and the old city centre of Aix. Experience the art of living of this classical 17th and 18th century city with its majestic avenues, its golden brown elegant hotels, its gracious fountains, its little squares. The calisson city (calisson being a typical French candy) is also a student metropolis with its many brasseries and always animated terraces: a modern city that has managed to keep a fine cultural heritage.

The markets of Aix and surroundings take place two or three times per week, entertaining small towns and villages and filling them with picturesque colours. The typical parasols protect market gardeners and greengrocers, attracting housewives and restaurant owners in a setting of those particular smells of basil and rosemary.

The cours Mirabeau and the old centre of Aix; the Saint-Sauveur cathedral and its cloister; the Granet museum, the Vasarely foundation, the Cézanne´s sites; for the ancient history lovers, the oppidum of Entremont; Château La Coste; the International Festival of Lyric Art, in July.

The region of Aix - Sainte Victoire

The region of Aix en Provence stretches out at the crossroads between the Luberon, the Alpilles and the Calanques of Marseille. This land of Cockaigne gathers all postcard images of Provence: cypress, vineyards, olive trees, and pine trees are part of the nature that´s almost become a universal heritage today.

At the East of Aix-en-Provence, the Sainte-Victoire mountain, with its unmistakable shape, is a symbol of Provence, a true rallying point. The mountain was immortalized for about sixty times by Cézanne who depicted the mountain he was so fond of.

This mountain looks out over a large natural site with fourteen particularly charming towns such as Le Tholonet, Puyloubier and Saint-Anthonin sur Bayon. A 19 m high cross overhangs the Notre-Dame de la Victoire chapel and a 17th century priory. A magnificent view is guaranteed…

At its feet you´ll find the Château de Vauvenargues, a castle bought by Picasso, who installed his studio here for 3 years, to be able to paint the site in a better way and to get closer to his art companions, from l´Estaque to la Sainte-Victoire.

The hike up to the Croix de Provence (1011 m), where you can enjoy a magnificent view on the Provenal mountains; La-Sainte-Baume with the cave of Mary Magdalene; the basilica at Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume.
